Warsaw Quartet by Douglas Jackson
Just read the first two of the series - gripping, though one quibble - in Blood Roses which was set in the early days of the German occupation starting in 1939 he talks of them using the Nacht und Nebel decree - but that was only issued in December 1941

I've read once a quote "some of the best horror stories are in history" no wonder authors like to use a historical spin on their thrillers.

I must say I was a bit wary - some of the books involving the holocaust tend to seem like the literary equivalent of snuff movies, but while he thoroughly addresses the holocaust he does it with openness and dignity, without losing the background threads of the books, if that makes sense.
